The genuine leather tie string can be used to tie the journal closed when not in use or be employed as a bookmark. It was commonly held in the Middle Ages that by their very nature stones and minerals had magic potential. For that reason, various gems were worn for prophylactic purposes: to detect poison, to assist childbirth, to prevent epilepsy.
